Bremen combines the fairy-tale romantic that stems from its illustrious past, the business-like activity that is provided by its harbor, and the ambitious ideas that emanate from a cultural center into one genuine mixture. A city steeped with 1200 years of colorful history, Bremen retains much of its heritage in a tangible manner.
One of the most beautiful market squares in the world, the Town Hall with its impressive Weser renaissance façade, imposing St. Petri Church, and the Roland, the statue of a knight, which has been guarding the city ever since 1404, are just a few of the many things to see.
Specialties as diverse as fish, cereals, coffee, chocolate, and – most famously – beer have turned the Bremish citizens into food and drink connoisseurs – a fact to which more than 1,000 restaurants, cafes, and bars pay generous tribute. Beyond coffee and beer, space rockets, cars, and airplanes find some of their origins in Bremen – or are shipped through the city, one of Germany's largest logistical centers.
