Dear Debaters,
One year ago, IUB’s young Debating Society ventured to stem its largest project to date in organizing IUB Open 2005. Sources disagree on whether it was ignorance or lunacy that made us aim for setting new standards in Germany’s prestigious ZEITDebatten series. While the campus’ cosy setting speaks for the former reason, our epic bashes are a clear indicator of the latter. May we be forgiven, our five-star youth hostel was within crawling distance.
So who didn’t love our our tour of historic Bremen in original Bremen weather? Yes, we understand our debaters’ needs, from our world-class wake-up service to tea-time with butter cake and red bull. And kingly all-you-ever-cared-to-eat.
Enough of the snug stuff, the competition was hard as bone. And the Grand Final fulfilled eight ambitious debaters’ childhood dreams, putting them on Bremen’s state parliament’s platform in front of three hundred souls cheering for their final speeches.
As last year’s convenor, I made damn sure everybody was having a hell of a time. Axel’s IUB Open 2006 promises to be even better, as the team is now equipped with all the experience and twice the lunacy from last time. I don’t mind skipping a week of class in order to come to Bremen, for another round of “Debates, Beck’s & Rock’ n’Roll”. See you there, y’all!
Cheers,
Bastian Laubner
