Dear Debaters,
The campus reputation of debating socials at a high ever since the IUB Open 2005, tournament participants were a clear minority at the 2006 break night. Already in pursuit of the evening's motto - Supreme Debauchery - guests were in fact slightly dismayed when DCA Derek Lande stopped the music to announce the teams on the semi-final. To save the situation he taught everyone an Irish drinking song, setting the theme for the remainder of what presumably was the longest night of the 2005/06 debating season.
Relieved of my official representative functions, I shall be excused for emphasizing merry social spirit as the hallmark of the IUB Open. Diyonisian nightly entertainment, a bed in crawling distance, and lovely blondes your wake-up service - many tournaments feature world-class debaters, but nobody treats them as nicely as we do.
Now, can it get any better than this? I guess, to have a sense of that possibility, you must know 2007 Convenor Henrik Maedler. Unjustly accused of snobism, he really is a utopian socialist who believes in decadence as a human right. Unable as yet to implement that vision globally, he settles for hosting the most lavishly hospitable event in the history of competitive debating. Or where else comes your free Gin and Tonic with booze from bottles worth twice the participation fee?
Cheers,
Axel Domeyer
Convenor IUB Open 2006
