Jacobs University Bremen is a private, independent research university in northern Germany with a very diverse student body. Students come from over 99 different countries, with the largest national group making up no more than 25% of the student population. English is the language of instruction and communication.  The Jacobs University Bremen Debating Society (formerly IUB Debating Society) was founded back in 2002 by several students who had come to IUB from countries where debating has a long and established tradition. These students started to run a few debates on campus and introduced Society members to the basics of British Parliamentary Style.                   ( http://www.jacobs-debating.org/ )

The Society soon joined the exponential growth of debating in Germany by becoming a member of the German debating umbrella organisation, the VDCH, and travelling to a large number of tournaments abroad.

Amongst other achievements, our teams won the Central and Eastern European Tournament in Berlin in 2003, the Gdansk Open in 2004, and the 2. Baltic Debating Championships - SSE Riga International IV 2005, broke to semi-finals in the English as a Second Language (ESL) competition of the 2005 and 2006 European Universities Debating Championships in Cork and Berlin respectively, and reached the Grand Final in the ESL competition at the 2006 World Universities Debating Championships in Dublin. More recently, teams from Jacobs University Debating Society broke to the semi-final of SSE Riga International IV 2007 and Tilbury House IV 2008.

Since its inception the club has also run successful and popular debating workshops and campus competitions; its debates on dictatorship and democracy have already become legendary. In 2005 the Society held the first-ever JUB Open debating tournament, a much-lauded event enjoyed by participants from across Europe. Buoyed by this initial success, the JUB Debating Society was proud to be selected by the VDCH to host the JUB Open for a second time in 2006. Since then we could continue our series of tournaments and were happy to be able to celebrate our small jubilee with the fifth edition of Jacobs Open in spring 2009. More Society more recently has dedicated itself to spreading the knowledge of debating and engages in training and regular debates of its new members. Many of them will have their first chance to get to know the feeling of a debating tournament in the upcoming 6th edition of the Jacobs Open, to be hosted once more on the campus of Jacobs University Bremen 29.-31 January 2010!
